How to Ask Customers for Google Reviews, With the Link and Templates

Robbie November 1, 2026 google business profile · reviews · small business · templates

A customer who was happy with the work will often leave a review if someone asks at the right moment and sends them straight to the page. The trouble is that nobody asks. Here’s how to get the link, when to send it, and what to say.

Google gives every Business Profile a link that opens the review form directly. From Google’s help page:

  1. On a computer, go to business.google.com and open your Business Profile.
  2. Select Read reviews, then Get more reviews.
  3. Copy the link, or right-click the QR code and save it.

Google only generates the QR code in a computer browser. Once you have it, it works anywhere: print it on receipts or a counter sign, or put it at the end of an invoice.

When to ask

Ask when the customer is happiest, which is usually right after the job is done or the appointment ends, while they still remember the details. Good moments:

  • When the job is finished and the customer has seen it
  • With the final invoice or receipt
  • After a customer thanks you, in person or in a message
  • At the end of a support chat that solved the problem

The rules

Google prohibits offering anything free or discounted in exchange for a review, or for changing or removing one. Reviews have to reflect a real experience. The FTC’s rule on fake reviews, in effect since October 2024, also bars paying for reviews that express a particular opinion, and using threats or intimidation to get negative ones removed.

In practice:

  • Don’t offer a discount, a drawing, or a gift for a review.
  • Don’t write reviews for customers, or ask staff and family to post them.
  • Ask everyone you’d normally ask, not only the customers you expect to be happy.

Reply to every review

Google recommends replying to reviews, and future customers read the replies. Thank people for good ones. For a critical one, say what happened, what you did about it, and how to reach you. Keep replies short and never share anything private about the customer.

Making it automatic

The hard part isn’t the wording. It’s remembering to send the link after every job. Foundry24’s review requests add-on sends the request after each job or appointment, so every customer gets asked. It’s one of the six add-ons on the Growth and Pro plans, and on Pro, Foundry24 replies to the reviews too.

Questions

How do I get my Google review link?

On a computer, go to business.google.com, open your Business Profile, select Read reviews, then Get more reviews. Copy the link, or save the QR code. Google only generates the QR code in a computer browser, not on a phone.

Can I offer a discount for a Google review?

No. Google prohibits offering anything free or discounted in exchange for a review, or for changing or removing one. The FTC's rule on fake reviews, in effect since October 2024, also bars paying for reviews that say something positive.

Should I only ask happy customers?

Ask everyone you'd normally ask. Google asks businesses to accept all reviews, including critical ones, and recommends replying to them.

Do customers need a Google account to leave a review?

Yes. They can create one with any email address, not only Gmail.
